Dr. Elaida R. Fiegalan, is a professor in the Department of Crop Protection of the College of Agriculture, and the Director of the Plants Pests and Diseases Clinic and Surveillance and Research Center of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU), in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She holds a PhD (1998) in Entomology from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, an MSc (1990) in Crop Protection, and a BSc (1988) in Biology; both earlier degrees from the CLSU. She had been a classical taxonomist (Drosophilidae, and Tephritidae) until she was awarded the Fulbright Advanced Agriculture Scholarship in 2015 to research on molecular studies of fruit flies, and henceforth practiced integrative taxonomy. Her research involves examination of complex species of Bactrocera and Drosophilidae species, and also engaging herself in onion and corn pests research to apply her entomological skills and be able to share her insights with extension workers, farmers, and students. Her keen interest in Dipterans and how these flies occupy diverse ecological niches are what fuels her work on Drosophilidae, Tephritidae, Stratiomyidae, and other flies associated with organic matter field substrates.
