Dr. Victor B. Asio

Dr. Victor B. Asio is a University Professor of Soil Science & Geo-ecology at Visayas State University. He obtained his MS degree in soil science from the University of the Philippines Los Baños & International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and his doctoral degree in soil science and ecology from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. He completed postgraduate studies in soil science, geography, and plant nutrition at Justus Liebig University Giessen in Germany, and postdoctoral studies at National Taiwan University and Martin Luther University, Germany. He is a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD. Dr. Asio has authored or co-authored more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and books. He is a co-author of the Guidelines for Soil Description (4th edition), the global standard reference for field soil examination, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in several languages.  He is currently the editor of the Collection on Highly Weathered Tropical Soils for Discover Soil, a Springer Nature journal. He is the Founder and President of the Society for the Advancement of Philippine Soil Science (SAPSS) and an elected member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. He is a recipient of several awards, including the SEARCA Regional Professorial Chair Award and the Achievement Award of the National Research Council of the Philippines.
